Woman-Owned Deep Ocean Exploration Research Hosts Fishackathon

Come work alongside prototype submersibles at this Fishackathon being run for women and girls at the home of Deep Ocean Exploration Research in Alameda, California.

A $10,000 prize goes to the winning team that is competing with over 40 sites around the globe this coming Earth Day weekend.

The world famous oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle and her daughter engineer Liz Tayler are the founders of DOER Marine. Projects for the company include working on key parts of the submersible that James Cameron took to the Mariana Trench.

The Fishackathon, supported by the U.S. Department of State, has big-name suppoters such as Richard Branson's Virgin Group.

Kaki Flynn, the co-organizer with Liz Taylor and DOER Marine, is excited to be hosting a Hackathon just for women and girls.

"Liz and I both agreed it was huge for girls to see that women can build submersibles, and be the CEO of a company that build world the equipment for exploring not just the ocean but the waterways that cross the United States shore to shore. You need knowledge of both software and hardware to explore the underwater world; whether we are talking about the Hoover Dam, the ocean floor or the marshlands."

This will be the only all women and girls Hackathon in the global competition.
